MP ($2234.75)
CO ($350)
Button ($1000)
SB ($2029)
BB ($3622.05)
Hero (UTG) ($1183)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with A, J
Hero bets $40, 2 folds, Button calls $40, 2 folds

Flop: ($95) Q, 2, J (2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets $60, Hero calls $60

Turn: ($215) 10 (2 players)
Hero checks, Button checks

River: ($215) 2 (2 players)

Hero checks, Button bets $155, Hero raises to $680, 1 fold

Total pot: $525 | Rake: $3

Results:
Hero didn’t show A, J (nothing).
Outcome: Hero won $522

Granted I don’t rep much, but it’s also very hard to put me on a hand that needs to bluff, and TAGfish don’t like to hero call. FWIW my Jack is good on the river about 10% of the time when he bets- calling is not an option.

I don’t think I’m good enough to check-call the flop here. I think I would have just bet out.

It’s nothing to do with good enough, just mixing it up. There’s nothing wrong with betting the flop.

I am curious if you think he ever folds a Q here?

  • Rob says:

Well played. How often would you say you do this vs. folding? I have to imagine at some point they catch on or get frustrated and call with their KQ/AQ.

    • foucault says:

I’m sure they would, but it’s not a situation that comes up all that often. It matters a bit that I’m UTG, but honestly I don’t see a TAGfish calling KQ here any time soon.

Typically WA/WB situation. Tough decision. wp.

please tell me whats ur thought process that led u to c/c the flop instead of betting it.

I’ll say first that I think betting would be fine. Also, importantly, I don’t expect Villain to bet the flop all that often. I’m hoping it goes check/check. I guess I’d say his pre-flop range is pretty narrow, and when I’m ahead I’m way ahead but not getting three streets of value. So, I don’t need to bet the flop, either for value or for protection.

I like it as his betting all value hands on the turn……If I was him tho I would wonder what value hands your doing this with as its a weird line to take and im closing my eyes and calling with a Q.

    • foucault says:

Putting me on a value hand is only half the battle, though. I think he’s going to have just as much difficulty putting me on a hand that needs to bluff. I think a TAGfish is more likely to default to folding than calling when value bets and bluffs make equally little sense to him.
