Two Deep Runs

I had a solid Sunday today, no wins but made two deep runs. I took 2nd out of nearly 1000 runners in the Stars $150 6-max. The competition was surprisingly tough for a $150 tournament: I recognized three good players at my starting table, and the last few tables were downright tough. The competition was if anything over-aggressive, but there are worse mistakes to make. Speaking of over-aggressive:

River: (t397890) 2 (3 players, 3 all-in)

MP had 8, A (high card, Ace).
CO had 5, 5 (three of a kind, fives).
Outcome: Hero won t195804, CO won t202086

The guy who called with A8 wasn’t a bad player, either- and he snap called it. I’m surprised 55 didn’t raise the flop, but it certainly worked out well for me, since I don’t imagine I get MP’s stack if that happens. This was at the final two tables. I won a coin-flip or two and cold-decked a guy KK vs. AQ when we were down to 4. Oooh here’s a good one though that I played vs. the same guy:

Results:
Hero didn’t show 3, 4.
Outcome: Hero won t197280

The turn A is a great card to take him cheaply off of his floats. It greatly reduces the number of A’s in his range, and it makes sense that I could bet small with the hand I’m representing.

I ended up losing a big coin flip 99 < AKs, but not a lot I could do about that.

I also did pretty well in the $500 heads up FTOPS, finishing 9th out of 1024, nearly as well as I did last FTOPS, when I took 8th. I’m not thrilled with my bust-out hand:

Total pot: t3880

Results:

BB had J, J (two pair, Queens and Jacks).
Outcome: BB won t3880

Yeah, on the one hand, I’ve got 25 BB’s against a guy with a 20% 3-bet. On the other hand, I was just thinking to myself that he wouldn’t be 3-betting light with these stack sizes. Oh well, it can’t be that bad.

The condescension in your post was overwhelming. You call finishing 2nd out of 1k “going deep.” What do you consider winning the whole thing? Just doing all right? I hope I’m missing out on some irony here or something.

I’ll hang on to the demo tapes and wait for your major label release so I can make some money off of posers. Thanks.

Thanks for stopping by Steve. If you find me too modest, I’m sure you’ll enjoy 99% of the other poker blogs on the internet. Perhaps ADZ’s blog would be more up your alley?

Umm…I’m sure Andrew can defend himself, but he clearly said ‘two deep runs’ in reference to placing 2nd and 9th in two tournaments. Sounds like the right terminology to me, a humble grinder.

And Steve – I find it awe-inspiring that of all the pages on the Internet, you took enough time on one that you obviously don’t like to pause and write a critical comment.

You know you’ve made it when you have random haters who find microscopic things in your posts and make them seem important.

    Hand 1: Nice flop.

    Hand 2: Awesome.

Hand 3: You have positive expectation even if he would call your four-bet only with TT+, AJ+ (about top 6% of hands, and assuming the 20% number is realistic):

    70% (14 out of 20) you win 565.
    7.5% (25% of 6 out of 20) you win 2100.
22.5% (the rest) you lose 1780.

Thanks, Lin. I’m afraid I didn’t explain myself very well. That 20% number was just what he’d done so far in the match, including when we were deeper stacked. What I meant to say was that I had a feeling that his 3-bet range would be considerably narrower and stronger given our current stack sizes, as 3-bet-folding is somewhat awkward. That’s what makes shoving AT pretty questionable. Sorry for the confusion.

      • Lin Sherman says:

Okay, I see what you’re saying now. I could have read it differently than I did.

Anyway, definitely a boo-boo to shove against that range.

I’d probably just fold. Is there a case for calling?

  • Lin Sherman says:

He won’t get it, AB. Way too subtle.
