Underbetting the Flop

I final tabled the $500 KO Friday Night Fight on FTP last night, finishing in a slightly disappointing 8th. Not too shabby though considering I never got above the average stack and collected not a single bounty.

Since my November strategy article was about bet sizing in tournaments, here’s a spot where a small flop c-bet pays off for me:

Given how little I have left, Villain is going to shove or fold almost regardless of what I bet. Whether I have an overpair or a bluff, there’s not much of a need to bet big despite the wet flop texture. And as it turns out, underbetting also gives him room to get a little crazy.

  1. Well Played. I guess villain put you on a9, a8, 66, 77..etc.?
Make the 3 an 8 or 9 of clubs, would you make the same play?

    • Probably not just because Villain might be less likely to play some of his weaker hands, like bad draws or bottom pair, aggressively. I’d probably just shove and expect him to hero call often, as my hand would look like a draw.

  2. hovering right around 10 BB, it’s an interesting play, given that you’re opening yourself up to multiple calls. it’s something i don’t typically see at the lower levels i play at. i like it though, and will try and incorporate it at some point as people just love to play über aggro towards shorties. now all i have to do is pick up AA or KK, heh.

    • We were heads up on the flop, so I guess you are talking about multiple calls pre-flop because of the min-raise? With this stack size, I’m happy to get called by as many people as possible.

  3. Since I don’t play tournaments really is villain’s play defensible in any way? This just seems atrociously bad, given he has so little equity when called, and you can plausibly bet/call draws stronger than K7
