Episode 58: Super Knock Out Strategy with Miklos

Andrew’s friend Miklos is on the show this week to talk about the Hungarian poker scene, his recent deep run in a Super Knock Out tournament, and strategy adjustments more generally for tournaments with large bounties. This episode is extra-heavy on strategy, so you might find it helpful to reference the hand histories below as you listen.

  1. Yeah, congrats indeed – well deserved!

Andrew, I liked your use of a feminine pronoun at one point to describe one of the anonymous villains in one of the hands – seems like the sort of simple but inclusive thing that should be done more widely.

      • I prefer using they because I don’t appear to presume some player’s gender (corporate blog and all that) and I also don’t have to keep track of my distribution of gendered pronouns and worry about balance.

I don’t have a problem with they though. Mr Dumpling on the other hand, you would think they were put onto the bed of procrustes every time they were forced to read a piece laden with they. The they they inveigh, they know not to what they refer. Please forgive them!

I also think the idea that one is being inclusive by using a pronoun of a particular gender (in other words, that those who do not are being exclusionary vicars of the oppressor) is pretty contrived and usually contrived by people who think the front line of human rights struggle can be found in first world undergraduate student government and not in the refugee camps of Darfur. No offense or offense, as you please!

        • Whoah there, Gareth – please don’t put my words into “other words” when those other words don’t mean the same as my original words!

Just because I think that occasionally dropping in the feminine pronoun is a nice (and inclusive) thing to do from time to time it doesn’t remotely follow that I think those who don’t are “oppressors”. I generally use masculine pronouns myself, as it happens, and I’m definitely not a vicar, and I’d like to think I’m not an oppressor. But I think that dropping in feminine pronouns from time to time when describing an anonymous online poker player has at least some chance of making female poker players feel more welcome and less excluded, and as it is an incredibly simple and cost-free thing to do it’s therefore worth doing. I’m not sure what the contrivance is.

And how you go from there to “the front line of the human rights struggle” and the refugee camps of Darfur is something I’m still kind of scratching my head about. I’m re-reading my post and I can see the (intended) implication that using the odd feminine pronoun is a nice thing to do, but I don’t see any implication that I think it’s the most pressing political issue of our time, or anything close to it. No offense taken, you’ll doubtless be pleased to hear, but a fair bit of bewilderment.

          • Chris, I took Gareth’s strongest admonitions to be directed toward Mobius, not you or your comment. Seems like they have a little history on this pronoun issue.

As an engineer, I am stereotypically bad at grammar. Buy my approach for describing persons of unknown gender would be to default to what is most likely to be correct. Describing ballet, I’d use femaie. Describing poker, I’d use male. I’d usually be correct, but occaisionally wrong.

You have a good sentiment, to support small ways to make femails more confortable in the game. But, if there are females out there wanting to get involved in poker, but who hold back due to our presumption of male pronouns, well, dat shit crazy and I feel no need to oblige them.

          • Its hyperbole Chris.

Just like I don’t actually think Mr Dumpling would choose the bed of procrustes over reading another they…maybe that’s a bad example

            • Yeah, I got that you were doing hyperbole. It’s just that, as applied to my comment, it seemed to be an exaggerated version of something I didn’t actually say, and which doesn’t remotely approximate to anything I actually think, and thus didn’t really do the rhetorical work that hyperbole is supposed to do. There were some rather unfair and uncharitable assumptions there, I’d say.
