Can Your Opponents Change Their Stripes?

I just realized I never plugged my latest poker strategy article, which went up at the beginning of the month. It’s called “Can Your Opponents Change Their Stripes?“, and it’s now appearing in 2+2 Magazine:

Any adjective or category used to describe how someone plays should be thought of as a tendency, not an ironclad rule. It won’t generally cause that player to deviate wildly from correct play, and it doesn’t mean that that player is incapable of acting differently given sufficient provocation. If you think you’ve got a handle on how someone is playing, you probably don’t want to provoke them into changing it up.

Please let me know what you think!

  1. I liked it. Really good examples in the first 2/3 of the article.
I didn’t like the title (probably not your work). Article was really about how to think about your image and use it wisely as part of an overall strategy. Actual title applied mainly to the final 1/3 (which was good).

Also enjoyed the piece by Carlos, which was a smart follow up on staking after his latest interview on your podcast.

    • Thanks for the feedback. The title was actually mine, though when I submitted the article I told the editor I wasn’t wild about the title and encouraged him to change it if he thought of something better. So yeah, I agree it’s not great.

I prefer to have a vision for an entire article before I start writing, but when I’m on a deadline and not sure what to write about I’ll just start writing and see where it takes me. So the title had more to do with where I started than where I finished up. 😉

      • My feedback on the title seems harsh. Not my intent. In my head it was a mild, casual observation. But I am a known asshat, so there’s that. I enjoy your monthly column and wanted to make sure to comment on it.

  2. I liked it, the final point was something you have mentioned a lot in your latest tpe series which I found really helpful
