Episode 78.5: Big News and SCOOP Strategy

Big news from the Thinking Poker team! Starting next week, the best place to get our show will be from the PokerNews podcast feed. We’ll still post announcements here when there’s a new episode available, and we’ll keep the current feed active for a few weeks to give everyone a chance to migrate, but please save yourself the trouble and subscribe now via iTunes or your favorite feed reader.

We don’t have a full episode this week because Andrew has been too busy crushing (well, lightly bruising) the SCOOP, but we do have some bonus strategy content with Andrew and Nate talking through a tricky hand where Andrew used his history with a Villain to get paid in a creative way.

Edit: Fixed the RSS Feed link, thanks Dana!

  1. Congrats on the upward move! Don’t forget about us little guys when you are getting tons of downloads and swimming in ad revenue.

  2. Congratulations and good luck! Thanks for all the time you’ve both (and others) invested in the podcast so far. Here’s to the next level, cheers!

  3. Guys,

Please critique my thinking here on the first hand discussed. On this flop J83 with two hearts, we should be check raising with hands like 88, 33, J8s, J3s, and 83s. That’s around 14 combos. I’m assuming we 3bet JJ and fold J3s,83s pre. So we want some bluffs for balance. I’m guessing maybe 2 to 1? So 28 bluffs?

We want to choose the best bluffing candidates which would be combo draws like OESD and GS + flush draws, naked flush draws, and naked OESDs. I think we can get to 28+ with just these, the best of which would be Th9h. But where does that leave the hands like the QdTd you guys discussed? Maybe we 3bet these suited connectors preflop and dont even have them in our flatting range?

But if we do have them in our flatting range, maybe we should not check raise the Th9h? Maybe we check raise the QdTd and check call the Th9h which has so much equity that we can kinda play it like a showdown hand? If so what other traditional bluffing hands can we play this way?

It seems to me that we either have to check call with our best bluffing hands like Th9h or not check raise with our lesser bluffing hands like QdTd because if we check raise all of them, our flop check raising range would be too made hand weak as Nate mentioned.

Forgot to remove the bit about folding J3s and 83s pre once I realized that Andrew is never folding these.

Also, stay tuned to the podcast after the outro music. I really do love the outtakes that aren’t taken out. I vote for one of these each episode and hope it doesn’t change over at PokerNews…adds character.

      • Yep, we have to cherish these outtakes while we can. No way that gets by the corporate weenies in the future.

  4. epic! well deserved, I have recommended it to a few people and I am yet to hear something say they don’t love it

  5. I dunno, gotta be honest, I’m worried Nate and Andrew might “go hollywood” and forgot their roots. How will they have time to discuss strategy with Carlos when they will be sipping champagne with the high rollers?
    …….nah, great news guys!

    • Obviously if we are invited to any “high roller” events or lounges we will smuggle out the expensive bottles of champagne and re-sell them. #nitcast

    • Hopefully a given. If it doesn’t happen, it won’t be for lack of interest on our part, but because Carlos is too busy wrecking the geriatric game at Binion’s.

  6. Congratulations Andrew and Nate.

I enjoy pokernews, especially the learn.pokernews sleeve. However, I have a serious question. When I want to make ask dumb questions, make silly comments, or put words in Andrew’s mouth, will I have to do that over at the pokernews site going forward? The other commentors on this site are a treasure. I’d hate to see even one of them get siphoned off due to the move.

    • That’s a good question. I intend to continue posting announcements here when there is a new podcast available, so hopefully that can remain a place for the Thinking Poker community to discuss the episode.
