The Hangover, Nitcast-Style

Episode 101 of the podcast is coming this week, hopefully tonight. It may be a bit delayed, but it will be out soon.

In the meantime, you need to check out this great article from Carlos Welch, where he talks about cruising Las Vegas with some folks that regular podcast listeners and blog readers will recognize: Keone Young, Piefarmer, and Breyer. Needless to say, I’m beyond flattered to see this blog credited with bringing them together, though I’m also grateful to them and the many other regular commenters here who have contributed to this sense of community.

I know that posts here have been scant since WCOOP ended. Now that I’m more settled in San Francisco, I expect to resume more substantive posting. Thanks to you all!

    • A little about my comment – I’ve been traveling and haven’t been able to post any comments. I tried everything I could think of; using a different name and email, using a VPN to make it look like I’m in a different country, scanning with every type of virus/malware/whatever-else-they-call-bad-program. Right now I’m using a newly built gaming rig and having no issues. Apparently there is something on my laptop that makes Andrew’s spam filter think that I am a spam bot. Looks like it’s time for an OS refresh.

I read in Thomas Baker’s book (Antithetical Something Poker) that if you have a good enough processor for security you should install a VM (virtual machine) and do everything non-poker related on that VM. I think it’s time I head that advice.

      • FWIW I’ve also had trouble getting comments past various WordPress plugins here. It’s a testament to the quality of the site’s construction that it’s holding up so well with so little apparent maintenance. But at least one of the plugins has perhaps aged rather poorly.

  1. Carlos is that how you always dress for the tournaments full of old fishy dudes? Does looking like a pro do better for you then blending in?

    • Yes, I always dress the way I do in the group pic but I only put the TPE gear on when the guys gave it to me at the final table.

I tried to go for the old white guy look once but I just could not pull it off.

  2. I just tweeted at you about hypermiling 🙂 Also, I forgot you just moved to the Bay Area. If you’d like to get coffee sometime, let me know.

  3. Awesome story about the Vegas trip and final table from Carlos. This here plus I guess getting to listen to back episodes, I just love his humility and openness to learning and to broadening experiences through his poker community / this blog – these attitudes I believe would contribute greatly to Carlos being a formidable opponent on the felt. Inspiring in every way!

      • The thing is I traveled with poker buddies before. The conversation went something like this..
“You what??? You called??? You friggin’ Station!!! You should know better.” or “Yeah my read was correct I knew I had that fish but he sucked out on me with a 2 outer, I wouldve, couldve, and shouldve but didnt”.
Carlos is a teacher and Russ is a professional financial advisor and Dad. Talking poker with them was such a pleasure and learning experience. Plus the Tournament Poker Edge was such a down to earth bunch with no illusions about themselves. I just felt so lucky to be in the right place at the right time. Too bad my results werent better. But you know about that.

    • I loved this conversation. I wish I’d prepared better and I had no idea my webcam was that bad, but still this was one of the more enjoyable things I have done.

  4. I just want to say that this was a great trip for me on many levels. This was like my fifth WSOP trek. In the first four times I had walked away with a profit. The year before I met Andrew and had such a great time. I chopped the final table at a PLO MTT at Caesers and had won a couple of SNG’s. Had a lesson from AB as well who went over some things with me.
This time I played 7 minor events (mostly at the Aria) and cashed in nothing. But being with Carlos, Russ, and Breyer I learned so much about the game. Mostly about support for each other. In a highly competitive game sometimes egos collide. That’s the way I had learned this game was. The Mouth vs Raymer. Phil vs the world. The Sheik vs the Mouth. That’s the way poker is played. You grind and you kill.
These guys showed me a different way and in the ultimate a better way. Win or Lose you do your best and come away trying to improve. Its helped me not only in the game but in my life. For how is life’s outcome dealt with. You take the blows and you move on having some integrity and dignity. You take the winnings with as much introspection. Respect. For yourself, for the game, and for your fellow human.
I thank you guys. Lets do it next year.

        • Integrity, dignity, respect for yourself and the game, taking winning with as much introspection as losing – I like what you’re saying here Keone. Looking fwd to another ‘field trip’ report from you guys next year 🙂

  5. Great article and video, Carlos! I feel like I’m rubbing elbows with celebs, like you, Keone, and Gareth. Sorry if I left anyone out.

I’m not a poker strategist by any means but I have some thoughts on safety strategy. I enjoyed the crazy stories of riding the bus after 2 AM as much as the next person, but I wish you wouldn’t advertize this fact. Keep your cards close to your chest, as my father used to say. I know I’m a mother and a worrier, so excuse me for that.

Take my comments with a grain of salt. Next time you’re in the Baltimore area, feel free to stay on my couch again! Have fun and be careful.
