Episode 119: Jimmy Fricke

Jimmy Fricke, once known as “Gobboboy”, was one of the early stars of the internet poker book. After a short stint traveling the live circuit, he chose to settle in Las Vegas, while most of his friends and peers continued traveling to compete. In this interview, he reflects on that decision, how it’s affected his life for better and for worse, and how he pursues his passions in the face of depression. Jimmy also sticks around to talk Omaha Eight-or-Better strategy!

  1. Great interview. <3 gobbo! Shoutout to the works of Tyler Cowen too, i feel like i learned a lot from An Economist Gets Lunch.

  2. Excellent episode. I’m going to speak to something that’s always been very important to me and perhaps there’s some sage advice in it as well.

I want to start off in saying that I am now 26 but between the ages of 19-22 I aggressively pursued a career in eSports. I began by playing Halo 3 on a competitive level, competing in local tournaments and college sanctioned tournaments that gave away scholarship money as a prize. From Halo I began to explore Starcraft 2. Rather than being a player, I was a team and tournament league owner, managing weekly tournaments and planning events while working with a team of very young but very talented players. A number of those players have experience varying degrees of success with the most recent being a player who moved to CS:GO and is now playing for Team Liquid (huge accomplishment there). Another would be Wintergaming who has been burned at the stake recently for supposed viewbotting.

What you’re probably already aware of Jimmy, is that the community at large (and specifically Reddit) is an extremely fickle and savage hivemind. I wish you all be the best of luck in your endeavors and I’m excited to see what content is produced. I personally follow the DotA 2 scene very closely and with the recent disarray in consistent teams, you may be able to reach out to a few pros (free agents or retired) who would be able to create content for you.

I hope Jimmy reads these comments and if he doesn’t, Andrew or Nate please direct him to this comment.

  3. I was kinda left unsatiated. I wanted to ask Jimmy so many questions. About Australia and Gus Hansen. About Howard Lederer when he refused to let Gobbo boy be a FTP pro because of his looks. I know rude but I am still curious about how he responded. Ive always admired Jimmy.

A note about gaming. I did a job for Blizzard-World of Warcraft. When I found out they had 7 million subscribers to just one game I balked. $25 X 7,000,000 a month. You figure it out. It just made me ill. I couldn’t play another video game. And Ive made dozens of them.

  4. Keone-
You should go through the TwoPlusTwo Pokercast archives. I’m pretty sure Jimmy talked about the Lederer email slip-up and ass-hattery there. It was years ago, near the time Full Tilt was burning up I think.
