Episode 163: Gareth Chantler Interviews Syrian Refugees

Gareth Chantler talks about his latest writing/journalism project interviewing Syrian refugees in Turkey. Fair warning: there’s not much poker talk in the interview itself, this one is for all the Gareth fans out there! If you don’t know who Gareth is, be sure to check out his previous appearances on the show. There’s a reason he has fans!

If you’d like a copy of the interviews we discuss during the show, please write me at andrew (at) thinkingpoker (dot) net and I’ll send you one.

  1. Jesus, Gareth, be safe.

Two books that might be of interest:
Murakami’s book based on interviews surrounding the Aum attacks, Underground, impressed me a lot. It’s a while since I read it but I recall very little authorial voice, and a set of first person accounts by those who experienced the attacks. But this restrained approach and focus on individual experience worked out being very powerful.

    • Sorry, I thought better of the other. It’s called ‘Lost Lives’, but it’s not really interview based, more an indication of what a documentary, no-editorial approach can achieve. It is an attempt to record the facts and context of every death in the Northern Irish troubles and again it takes a very restrained methods that ends up as a really powerful piece of work – but perhaps more an inspiration than an actual model to think about.

  2. Hello,

Loved the interview and thought that there would be some way to request some of the material that Gareth had created. What do I need to do to receive the information.

      Just emailed them to you.

  3. Has there been any thought about a Thinking Poker meetup for the World Series? Trying to plan my Vegas trip and would love to have it around the time of the meetup if there’s going to be one.

    • We have had one each year for the last three years, and my guess is that Andrew and I will both be willing / eager to do one again this year. We don’t have fixed WSOP plans yet, but a good bet is the Gold Coast bowling alley some time within two days of Day 1A of the Main Event.

Again, that’s just a guess / what induction over previous meetup schedules would suggest. Glad you’re interested in coming!

    • No believe it or not. I was at Dalias, which I don’t think we went to. Like I said, quietest place in Bavaro I know of
