Episode 166: Collin Moshman

Collin Moshman is a widely respected sit-and-go player and coach and author, but he’s no one-trick pony. We talk to him about his background in Theoretical Mathematics, why he initially focused on sit-and-goes, how and why he branched out into other games, how he got into staking, how he manages his stable, and why on Earth he chose to marry a poker player!

Collin is also the author or co-author of three poker books (Heads-Up No-Limit Hold ‘Em, Sit-and-Go Strategy, and The Math of Hold ‘Em) as well as co-author, with his wife Katie Dozier, of The Superuser. He produces instructional videos for CardRunners. You can follow him on Twitter @teammoshman.

We’ve also got a special treat for you in the strategy segment. Brian Koppelman, whom we interviewed on Episode 149, is back to talk strategy, specifically how to play against a deep-stacked maniac.

Enjoy!

  1. Nate played at the Hideaway?!?!!! That’s my dive- wish I’d known. Would have loved to say hello. Glad you enjoyed Seattle!

Also I loved hearing about the game at the M8trix. Just hearing about those stakes makes me queasy… Nice work, Andrew!

    • I really enjoyed it there. Nice little place. I think there’s a part of me that will always prefer poker in cardrooms to poker in casinos. Actually, I think part of what I like about the WSOP is the convention-center setting–it makes things feel a bit like a West Coast cardroom on a whole lot of steroids.

    • Thanks, Bryan. And thanks for making it happen! I meant to give you credit for that in the intro, sorry that I forgot.

      • Not something I care about but thanks. You and Colin have both been instrumental in my poker learning and progress so whatever I can do to help you all is my pleasure.

  2. I just love hearing anything with or by Collin Moshman.I have only heard a couple of interviews like this one, usually i see him via a coaching vid. I also like his wife Katies’ vids she does on Drag the Bar,they are available for free and they are well worth the money. She, like Collin is sooo smart on pokers, actually they are very smart on a whole range of things, We Coach It,the site they started,is a great help to people in general should they find it. They are very helpful when approached as well,i can personally attest to that, how Stars has never got them aboard as Team On-Line Ambassadors, and instead employed pros half of us never even heard of is,imo,a real oversight by the powers that be at Stars HQ. I heard that The Moshmans’ are so clued up on poker, that, Google asks THEM questions.

  3. Thanks to Carlos for picking Andrew up in a car after the high-stakes game. Always glad to hear of these high-adventure events once they have ended well.
