8h ($280 in pot). Checks to CO, CO bets $125, Hero calls, MP calls.

8d ($655 in pot). Checks to CO who bets $285. Hero?

Hand 2 – Tournament, effective stacks 35bb

CO opens 2.5bb, Hero calls 9d 8d in the SB.

9s 5h 4d (8.5b in pot). Checks to CO, who bets 9bb. Hero calls.

5s (26.5bb in pot). Both check.

Js (26.5bb in pot). Check, CO shoves, Hero?

  2. Basically, you should always be trying to win every pot (within reason), even if it’s a small one. At the end of the day winning a limped pot means more chips in your stack. When to Play a Limped Pot This one is simple, save for a few strategic exceptions, you should never limp in No Limit HoldEm.   You should pretty much only play limped pots when your opponent(s) decided to limp and your hand is not good enough to raise from the big blind. As for those strategic exceptions, here are the 2 common ones: You decide it’s best to limp your entire continue range as the Small Blind in Blind vs Blind confrontations.

    • Thanks for the comment. FWIW, I agree with the general sentiment, but I can find a few more exceptions. Limping behind other limpers when you are on the button with a hand that isn’t strong enough to raise (not ALL hands that aren’t strong enough to raise, but some) comes to mind immediately. There are also game conditions where open limping in early position can make sense IMO. Nate and I discuss this in our Coaching Carlos series.
