Strategy Hand 1

Effective stack: 22K

Blinds: 300/600, 100 ante

I was under the gun with pocket tens and raised to 1500. I was called by a guy who looked to be in his mid twenties, an middle aged guy on the button, and an older gentleman directly to my right in the big blind.

Pre-flop Pot: 7300

Flop comes Kd/8h/10h. The bb checks to me and I bet 2500. The two callers fold and the bb calls.

Flop Pot: 12,300

The turn was a 2 of clubs. BB checks, I bet 4500. He calls.

Turn Pot: 21,300

The river was a 9 of diamonds. He thought for about 20 seconds and then bet 5K.

Strategy Hand 2

$2/$5 NL. I open raise in mp to $20 with JdJh. One caller on button.

Flop JcQh2s

I bet $35, he calls.

$111 in pot, turn comes 9c. I bet $65, he raises to $200 total, I call.

$511 in the pot, river is a 5d.

I check. He bets $200.

  1. Fantastic strategy segment/episode (maybe I’m biased from facing a tough decision with a set about 15 hours ago – I’ll think about sending the hand in to the show, though it might feel redundant after this episode).

Andrew talking about BB ante tournaments made me proud of myself because OMG THAT’S WHAT I’VE BEEN SAYING, to very little effect … 2/3 of the people I’ve talked to about it can’t grasp that if you’re UTG with a BB ante, your EV of folding is negative (even moreso than with traditional antes) so that busting out is less bad than it otherwise would be. Now I can say “SEE? Andrew Fucking Brokos says I’m right!”

The most lightbulby item for me was the idea that (a) most people don’t bluff the river often enough, big enough or smart enough … ok I knew that part, but more importantly … (b) that has implications for your turn decision, possibly allowing you to call or bet turn more happily because there’s not so much danger of facing a massive bluff on the river.

Thanks as always … will see at least one of you soon.
