Episode 263: Clayton Fletcher Runs Deeper

Comedian and professional poker player Clayton Fletcher earned himself a fourth podcast appearance with his 28th place finish in the 2018 WSOP Main Event! I think they gave him some cash for that as well. He and Andrew meet in his hotel room shortly after his elimination to discuss some key hands as well as the unique perspective and advantages that his experience as a performer provides him.

Our first interview with Clayton was Episode 74. We discussed his 96th place finish in the 2015 Main Event on Episode 145. And in 2017, we talked about how he prepares for the WSOP on Episode 216.

  1. Not sure I agree with the idea that if you put your opponent in the tank you’re doing your job well. Sure, he’s going to have borderline decisions with some of his holdings after certain actions of ours, but the test of whether we are doing our job well or not has to depend on our holdings and how he would play his range against them.

E.g. if we overbet check-raise all-in JJ on KQ2r we might give him a tough decision with K5, but our move is still terrible.

  2. Hi, Richard. Thank you for engaging! I see your point about tough decisions, but I think in a vacuum your specific example doesn’t illustrate it.

I mean that if I also make the same play with enough hands that beat K5, then overbet check-shoving with JJ becomes a good play versus K5 because when he calls he’s beat too often. And when he folds then he folds the winner too often.

And in both cases, he’s got a tough decision.
