Winner!
Wow. Thanks to everyone who was watching and following along.
For those who weren’t, here’s the quick version:
With 10 left I was in 8th, which was a tough spot because Bakes was swinging his big stack extremely well. I pretty much couldn’t move. Finally picked up AK and ended up getting all in against QQ, thank god it held.
Got into some confrontations early at the final table but mostly waited for shorties to bust.
Five-handed it was me, Bakes, Psychobenny, moi_rhums, and some random satellite qualifier. I ended up getting AA vs. Bakes’ KK for a massive pot that virtually busted him and gave me a commanding chiplead.
From there I took full advantage of having Psychobenny, the next biggest stack, on my right. I kept the pressure on him and ground him down while he was still hamstrung by the presence of the shortstacks. We got 3-handed with Psycho, me, and the satellite qualifier. I ended up doubling the satty guy twice, then he got TT all in against Psycho’s AK and held to make it HU.
I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. I came into HU with 2:1 lead on a player who was literally clueless about HU. I offered him a ridiculously one-sided chop and was relieved when he declined. Went on to own him HU.
FTOPS Event 25 Day 1 Hands
We played for 10 hours, so obviously there were a lot of hands, but here are two that stick out in my head:

I think his range for calling the flop is pretty weak and usually drawing dead on the turn, so I choose not to bet. I think I just get too many folds from hands that will give me a bet (or in this case two) on the river, and there aren’t a lot of hands that are going to pay off two streets.
FTOPS Event 25 $2000 NLHE 2-Day
Woke up at 6AM this morning, drove from Boston to Baltimore, got in just in time to fire this bitch up, and 10 hours later I am through Day 1 ranked 22/106, with 946 runners starting. I actually burst the bubble myself, busting the lovely Lauren Kling when she shoved 7BB’s, I called with AJ and sucked out on her AA.
We start play tomorrow at 2. Ugh.

durrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Congratulations on busting durrrr in the following tournament:

I’m not a big fan of his pre-flop call, but he was playing this whole tournament pretty crazily. Not surprisingly, it didn’t seem to be too important to him, at least not at this nascent stage.
April
A third of the year is officially behind us. Am I 1/3 of the way to achieving my Yearly Resolutions?
Goal 1: Average 15 Hours/Week Playing My “Regular” Games
I’ve found that 15 hours/week enables me to earn a pretty healthy income, far more than I could make at any real job I could get, without impeding too much on my lifestyle.I consider my regular games to be anywhere from 2/4 NL to 50/100 NL as well as big tournaments like the Sunday Majors, the FTOPS, and the WCOOP; time spent playing any of these will count towards my goal.
I’m now a full week ahead of schedule, plus I know I’ll be playing a lot in the coming weeks with the SCOOP going on. That’s good, because I intend not to play at all in late May/early June.
Goal 2: Earn $X in NLHE Cash Games
It’s very tough to predict or control what I will earn playing tournaments. With cash games, though, it’s mostly a question of game selection and putting in hours. It’s not something I’m going to announce publicly, but I am going to set a target, and I am going to put in extra hours towards the end of year if I’m on pace to come up short.
FTOPS Event 18: $300 Rebuy NLHE 6-Max
Like the $100 rebuy, this one ran with an overlay. I was only in for $900, so I had like $240 in overlay.
It went down basically the way I expected it to: got some fish to clown off their stacks to me early, then had to play poker with decent players. Two of my tables had at least one high-stakes cash player on my left who is definitively better than I am, which sucks especially in a 6-max format.
This one is vs. Shannon Shorr, it actually got me to post a hand on 2+2 for the first time on months:

FTOPS Event 12: $1000 6-Max
I’ve had some deep runs lately in the Saturday $300 6-max, so I was looking forward to this event. Unfortunately, it didn’t really go my way. I lost a big pot (though not my stack) with AJ vs. AQ on a AJ7Q9 board in a 3-bet pot. My bust-out hand requires a little explaining. The guy who open limps had been doing that a fair bit, I think he was playing like 32/15. I’d just shoved over his limp the hand before.
The guy who shoves had been pretty shove-happy in general. I think he’d even open shoved like 30-some BB’s once. I recognized his name, so I don’t think he was a maniac, just a tourney donk who understood unexploitable shoving and was more comfortable playing that way.

OK I did play it
. It didn’t end up taking up much time at all.
I’m still not sure about this fold. He certainly ought to have more than AA to do this, but you never know with these clowns. Then again if he does have AA2 (or any A2, really), I’m smoked.

Here’s the one that cost me most of my chips. When I saw the flop, I had every intention of folding, but once everyone in between folded, I decided to go with it.
