God People Suck at PLO8
(Sorry had trouble finding a converter for PLO8)
I mean I’m no expert but jeebus, guy cold calls a 3-bet out of position with AKT8 and then stacks off with top-pair, a gutshot, and a backdoor flush draw:

FTOPS Event 2: $240 PLO8 Rush KO
This was the second rush tournament I’ve played, and while I miss having reads and establishing dynamics at the table, I will say that rush otherwise allows for great tournament structures. You get in a ton of hands at each blind level and the tournament still goes by pretty quickly. Especially for non-NLHE games, where reads aren’t worth nearly as much to me, I think I’m a big fan. Anyhow, here are a few random hands:
Slowplay Costs Me the Pot
It’s really rare that slowplaying is correct in PLO8, and despite the results of this hand, I’m pretty happy with my decision. On the flop, it’s just really hard for him to have anything at all and so easy for me to have trips. When I’m ahead, I’m usually way ahead, sweating two or in this case just one out. Turn is great for me since it means there will be no low; I probably would have bet a rag. I don’t think I can expect too many calls if I bet the river, and most of the hands will value bet if I check anyway, so I’d rather try to induce. Or, in this case, save myself some money.

SCOOP Event 30-H: $1000 PLO8
I like PLO8 and know a bit about it, but I’m far from an expert. I also played the $100, in which I was surely a favorite, but the 1K had a surprisingly competent field (or maybe not so surprising- I mean it was a 1K). Not that there wasn’t any bad play, but I may well have been a dog to the field.
I decided that at least in the early stages of the tournament, I was going to limp in EP with anything I wanted to play. Villain here had been isolating me a lot, so I decided to check-raise him on this flop- not sure if that’s good or nto.

OK I did play it
. It didn’t end up taking up much time at all.
I’m still not sure about this fold. He certainly ought to have more than AA to do this, but you never know with these clowns. Then again if he does have AA2 (or any A2, really), I’m smoked.

Here’s the one that cost me most of my chips. When I saw the flop, I had every intention of folding, but once everyone in between folded, I decided to go with it.

Edit: Yeah, I’m an idiot. It was late when I posted this, and I did in fact calculate my pre-flop equity rather than my flop equity. I’m actually a 2:1 dog here, which is more what I expected. Thanks to qanda201 for pointing it out in the comments. I thought it seemed too good to be true.

Shows what I know about this game. I was embarassed to even post this because I felt like I played this bad and got my money in bad, but turns out I’m a pretty substantial favorite:
PCA Final Table
45 runners in the $500 PLO8 today, and yours truly managed to final table it, finishing 8th (we were playing 8-handed) for a whopping $875. Also at the final table was my friend and fellow Poker Savvy Plus instructor Tom Chambers, who finished 4th after a series of gross suckouts by every other player at the table. Tom assures me it was not good to get it in with AcQcTx8x for 14BB’s UTG+1 early at the final table (my bustout hand).
Two other moderately interesting hands:
50/100, I open to 300 with AA64, solid online guy on the button calls, decent slightly passive European lady calls on BB. Flop Q95r, she checks, I bet 600, Button calls, she check-raises pot, I have a pretty standard fold.
100/200, four limpers, I check Q246 in the BB. Flop Kh Qh 2c (I have no hearts). Checks around.
Turn Kh Qh 2c 7d. I check, first limper checks, same lady from before bets 500, gets one fold. I have about 3K in my stack and fold, but I am not so sure this was good. I think check-raising probably gets me a fold maybe 20-25% of the time, and while I’m not ahead of her calling range, it’s very difficult for her to be ahead of me for both high and low.
Another PLO8 Final Table
This time on FTP, and there were only 110 runners. I busted in 7th on a kinda dumb shove:

Edit: On further reflection, I actually think his call is OK. He needs barely 33% equity, as he probably isn’t behind the SB caller, and my range is likely weighted towards the strong draws, against which he is a slight favorite, than the strong made hands that have him in bad shape.
A little over an hour into the PLO8 FTOPS Knock-Out event. I’ve been getting a lot of crap but also playing conservatively and have just a hair over the 5K starting chips. Blinds are 50/100, I raise UTG+1 with Ac Jd 4c 2h. MP2 calls and BB calls.
Flop comes Kc 8d 7c, giving me nut flush draw, overcard, and nut low draw with counterfeit protection. I bet 650 into 950, both players call. Turn is the Qs, and I have just about a pot-sized bet left in my stack. I shove, and the MP guy calls me with AA54 for an overpair, a gutshot, and a shitty low draw.

But of course against a few other hands in my range he doesn’t fare so well:
