April

A third of the year is officially behind us. Am I 1/3 of the way to achieving my Yearly Resolutions?

Goal 1: Average 15 Hours/Week Playing My “Regular” Games

I’ve found that 15 hours/week enables me to earn a pretty healthy income, far more than I could make at any real job I could get, without impeding too much on my lifestyle.

I consider my regular games to be anywhere from 2/4 NL to 50/100 NL as well as big tournaments like the Sunday Majors, the FTOPS, and the WCOOP; time spent playing any of these will count towards my goal.

I’m now a full week ahead of schedule, plus I know I’ll be playing a lot in the coming weeks with the SCOOP going on. That’s good, because I intend not to play at all in late May/early June.

Goal 2: Earn $X in NLHE Cash Games

It’s very tough to predict or control what I will earn playing tournaments. With cash games, though, it’s mostly a question of game selection and putting in hours. It’s not something I’m going to announce publicly, but I am going to set a target, and I am going to put in extra hours towards the end of year if I’m on pace to come up short.

March

Another month, another monthly review of progress towards my Yearly Resolutions.

About 7 hours ahead of pace. I actually lost ground on this in March, which surprised me, because I really felt like I was packing the hours in. I’m still hopeful that April will be a big month, though.

February

With another month behind us, it’s time to review my progress towards my Yearly Resolutions.

Ahead of pace by nearly a week!

Pretty much exactly on pace. February wasn’t such a great month, but getting off to a good start in January was a big help.

January

One month into 2010, it’s time to review my progress towards my Yearly Resolutions.

Goal 1: Average 15 Hours/Week Playing My “Regular” Games

Slightly ahead of pace: I played about 70 hours this month, not counting a few hours spent in smaller stakes games and the PLO8 tournament at the PCA.

Goal 2: Earn $X in NLHE Cash Games

It’s very tough to predict or control what I will earn playing tournaments. With cash games, though, it’s mostly a question of game selection and putting in hours. Ahead of pace. Running good at 40/80 and 25/50 helps. A few more months like this one, and I’ll be a happy boy.

May

May was a solid month, though a bit bittersweet because it started off phenomenally and then took a pretty sour turn. I can’t complain about the bottom line, but let’s see what kind of progress I’m making on my yearly goals.

Resolution One: Keep Grinding NLHE Cash Games

Goal 1: Earn $X in NLHE Cash Games

Still chugging along at not-quite-on-track-but-satisfied-nonetheless. I’ve played about 165K hands, which I’m happy about as well.

Goal 2: Earn Supernova status on PokerStars

I’m on track anyway, having maintained by Platinum status for the month, but I’d really like to win a Poker Stars WSOP satellite for the cash overlay and the 100K VPPs.

Resolution Two: Diversify My Income Streams

Goal 3: Monetize This Blog

The WordPress upgrade I promised way back when is finally under serious development, thanks to minimal effort from myself and considerable work on the part of my girlfriend.

Goal 4: Get Back Into Coaching

I finished up the first group seminar and was very happy with how it went. All three participants have told me they were as well, and one of them has already arranged some individual sessions.

April

I won and lost a lot of money in April. I finished the month with a decent though not spectacular bottom line, but given what I spent on tournament buy-ins (thank you very much, SCOOP), I’m impressed that I was up at all.

Resolution One: Keep Grinding NLHE Cash Games

Goal 1: Earn $X in NLHE Cash Games

Getting very close (to being on track, that is). If I can maintain this rate for the rest of the year, I’ll be happy. And if I manage a respectable tournament score to boot….

Goal 2: Earn Supernova status on PokerStars

I’m well on track now. The SCOOP was worth a lot of VPPs, so I’m glad I grinded up to Platinum last month. Were I to hit Supernova in the next two months, which I won’t, I’d be eligible for a free suite upgrade at the Palms during my WSOP trip.

Then again, this goal is going to a breeze now that Stars is offering 100,000 VPPs to their satellite qualifiers who actually play in the WSOP main event. Now I all have to do is win one of their damn satellites.

Resolution Two: Diversify My Income Streams

March came in like a lion but went out like a lamb

March came in like a lion but went out like a lamb. I was within a few hundred dollars of even, then dropped 10K on the Bay 101 WPT. I don’t regret it, though. It was a fun experience (the tournament itself, and the vacation) and, based on the people I played with, a good value. That’s what bankrolls are for. Not that I’m anywhere near rolled for a 10K tournament, but I am overrolled for the 5/10 and 10/20 games that I consider my “regular games”, so I can afford the occasional shot.

The vacation did me some good. After more than a week of no poker, probably the longest I’ve gone since I started playing seriously, I really buckled down and put some hours in. I played a few more tables than usual, maintained a pretty solid game, and got myself pretty well into the black by the end of the month. Of course, with the Spring Championship of Online Poker starting tomorrow, that profit could all be gone by mid-April….

Resolution One: Keep Grinding NLHE Cash Games

Goal 1: Earn $X in NLHE Cash Games

I’m still not on track to hit this goal, but even if I continue at my current rate, I’ll pull down a respectable income by the end of the year.

February

February felt like (and was) a pretty awful month, but I did actually win some money. Just not nearly enough to make up for January. After the first week, I was in black and then some, pretty much right where I wanted to be for the month. Then it was back to bad beats and cold decks. I’ll refrain from posting any whine hands here, though, and get on to evaluating progress towards my yearly goals.

Resolution One: Keep Grinding NLHE Cash Games

Goal 1: Earn $X in NLHE Cash Games

Still on track to be busto by the end of the year….

Goal 2: Earn Supernova status on PokerStars

I earned 8866 VPPs in February, which keeps me on track to make Supernova in November. Truthfully, I’m just not digging the games on Stars. Maybe I’m just more accustomed to the FTP interface, but I also like the deep stack games, the Bet Pot button, and the way the tables tile to fit whichever screen I have them on.

Resolution Two: Diversify My Income Streams

Goal 3: Monetize This Blog

I need to get on this…

Goal 4: Get Back Into Coaching

Progress is slow but steady. I’ve had some conversations with former students about how to structure group sessions, and I may get a trial session off the ground soon.
