In a blind battle, I expect to be way ahead here even after getting called on the flop. It’s such a rare spot for me to check-raise that I expect Villain to bet not just floats but also any pair (which will be mostly 4’s and 6’s, rarely anything I’m behind) and maybe even Ace-high. If he 3-bets, I’m comfortable folding as he’ll have trips or better the vast majority of the time.

I even expect to be ahead of his turn calling range, since he can probably have a lot of draws. I check planning to call the river, expecting that he won’t value bet at all thin, and while he could have a bluff, I think busted straight draws are more likely. The results of this hand actually bolster my confidence in my plan, as it establishes that he isn’t value betting at all thinly on the river. When he does bet, he’ll have exactly a flush or a bluff, and I think a call will show a profit.

He happened to hit on the turn this time, but sometimes that happens when you go for thin value.

  1. This seems like one of the worst rivers to c/c on (?)

Given you that its rare that your C/R this turn, you’re saying you effectively rep a polarized range. Is villain really going to float and then bluff this river with A high?

Like, are you really C/Ring AJo here or something? Once he calls your C/R, I see very few hands in his range that need to bluff this river that we’re ahead of. Yes, a hand like 67 might decide you never check a value hand here and opts to bluff river, but otherwise, every draw got there, and your line is so unlikely to be a marginal 1 pair hand, that he’ll either beat you by checking back with SD value, or understand you’re never c/fing this river.

I guess its hard to compare him not betting 78 to him wanting to bluff JT if he got here, but what range are you putting him on that bet/calls the turn that wants/needs to bluff

    • I don’t think I made this clear – what I mean to say is:

If he’s not betting 78 he clearly views your river range as super polarized. Once he bet/calls turn he very likely has improved on this river.

If he’s not going to bet a very strong here, for fear that your range is so strong, why do you expect him to bluff?

Obviously you don’t know he’s going to check a hand like 78 on this river, but I think the 9h either significantly increases his bluffing frequency with 1 pair hands worse than A6 that feels they can rep a flush / straight once you check b/c you’re never checking a strong hand, or he just valuebets every time your beat.

Without a read that he can turn made hands into bluffs, I dont see many bluffs in his range.

      • Meh, it’s obviously not the ideal card, but straight draws still missed. He can fear that my calling range is strong and still believe that I’ll have a lot of air that beats his 7-high or whatever but can’t call a bet.
