Episode 131: Runner Up with Dara O’Kearney

Fresh off a second-place finish in WSOP Event #45 ($1500 NLHE), Dara O’Kearney, who first appeared on Episode 102, returns to the show to talk about the mixed emotions that result from a near-victory at the WSOP and why he chose the WSOP over the softest online tournaments of the year.

You may not be a Super Razzdugi player, but please don’t skip the opening strategy segment! Nate’s “meditation” is a delight. Here are rules for Razzdugi. The “Super” qualifier means that players get four down cards and discard two of them on third street.

  1. I wish that fun games like Razzdugi were introduced with some big-budget pc-console titles for mature audience.
Almost every latest big-budget pc-console title includes mini-game(s).
Often a mini-game is kind of card game.
I played in juicy home game in London last week.
The game of choice was -GWENT.
I never heard before about his game before. After one hour play I felt I was top shark.
GWENT is pretty simple and “stupid” game if I have to compare with Razzdugi.
But I enjoyed because of financial gain and social interaction.
Next day I googled GWENT to learn the strategy.
I was pretty surprised to learn that the game was introduced just month ago as mini-game-quest in Witcher 3.
A month? Well a month in case of big AAA titles translates into millions of GWENT educated players.

  2. I listened to this episode like 5 times on repeat yesterday just to drown out all the talking at my table. With Phil Laak on my right and Cory Waaland behind me, I was drowning in a cacophony of exotrovertage. It was cool to have a soft spoken guest on the nitcast to save me.

Plus this dealer named T-Rex had an entire prepared monologue choc full of dinosaur jokes that literally lasted 10 minutes. Painful.

I was mentally in full asshole mode wishing everyone would just shut up when I heard you guys mention how I am always happy. That made me happy and I allowed myself to form a smile that I am sure T-Rex thought was accredited to his “I had 3 velociraptors for breakfast” joke.

Dara joked about me railing him live and online simultaneously, but he did the same thing during Andy Black’s final table. Andy would come over and check in to get info on a hand and Dara was like Mick in the Rocky movies. He seemed to love playing that role which let me know that he and I have a lot in common. Now that I think about it, I was railing Dara as he railed Andy live and online simultaneously. Im a mostly just a fan at heart and I am not ashame of it. Dara is a class act and if you want a real treat, listen to episode 7 of the chip race with Andy Black. I love the perspective that the Irish guys bring to poker.

  3. Thanks guys!

The Irish WSOP contingent definitely loved Carlos!

Was good fun playing Micky to Andy’s Rocky 🙂

And glad at least one person got the Barton Fink reference!
