Play Optimal Poker Errata

My proofreaders caught quite a few errors before Play Optimal Poker went to print, and I take full responsibility for those that made it through. I fixed some of these shortly after the book’s release, so depending on when you purchased your copy, your book may not have all of these. However, I wanted to compile them all in one place.

I reference all errors by both page number in the print/PDF versions of the book and by “location” in the Kindle version. The Kindle locations are based on the version available from the Nitcast.com store but should be quite similar to those purchased from Amazon.

Page 23/Location 282 “upper right quadrant” should read “lower left quadrant, where Andrew has a payoff of 1, which is lower than what it would be if he stuck with the comedy.”

p. 66/Location 890 The EVs in the right-hand column of the chart are incorrect. The general point that Ivan’s EV increases along with his bet size still stands, but the chart should look like this:

p. 77/Location 1136 “Reciprocal Ranges Game” should read “Clairvoyance Game”. The point stands, but the Reciprocal Ranges game has not yet been introduced.

p. 94/Loc 1343 – Should read, “Even with reciprocal ranges and betting opportunities, position still enables Ivan to show a profit. In fact, his EV is exactly the same as in the half-street game.” Giving Opal the option to bet does not increase her EV or decrease Ivan’s. Logically, this makes sense: Opal’s strategy of never betting in the half-street game is a viable equilibrium strategy in the full-street game, which means that it must have the EV of every other equilibrium strategy in the full-street game.

p. 110/Location 1519 – T9s and 98s should be included in UTG’s opening range. I experimented with several versions of this scenario and accidentally used a screenshot from the wrong one in the book. The subsequent analysis assumes these hands are in UTG’s range. The image should look like this:

p. 120/Location 1634 – Delete “and 98s”. This is related to the error above; 98s is actually in UTG’s range.

p. 215/Location 3001 – “Blockers are the be-all and end-all” should read “Blockers are not the be-all and end-all”

p. 223/Location 3121 – Delete the phrase about KK folding if it doesn’t raise. Some combinations of KK are indifferent between calling and raising but never fold, while others are indifferent between all three options. All call some percentage of the time at equilibrium.
