Another “Best Bluff”

This is another example of making a move with one of the best possible bluffs. The flop float is a little more questionable.

Villain isn’t repping much, I doubt he’d even 3-bet most trips here, and to be honest I thought my call would freeze him. I would have given up most turns, but when I turned the draw, I was compelled to put him to the test instead. Generally it would be better to make this play with clubs or something like 9s8s that can turn more draws so that I don’t have to give up to turn barrels on as many cards.

  1. nh. but i wonder what you would have done first to act on the river, if he checked behind on the turn (which you say you expected to happen, assuming he includes QQ KK in his flop 3b range and wants to now pot control them on the turn. Would you be looking to overbet, bet full pot, 3/4 pot? or would you just check assuming he’s looking to pick you off, which i doubt since your flop line is so strong.

    • Very good question. My intention was definitely to bluff the river if the turn checked through. This is primarily a float, meaning that I am trying to represent that I have something by calling rather than raising. Paradoxically, a call often appears stronger than a raise, since a raise could also be interpreted as a bluff. I don’t think expect him to fold QQ or KK, at least not on non-club rivers, but I don’t think he’d usually play those this way. I do believe I can get him off K- and A-high and possible small pairs or a weak pair that he caught on the turn or river.
