Thin Value Bet in Weird Spot

I really had no idea what to put UTG+1 on here, but I didn’t think he’d play anything better than 99 this way on the flop. Obviously the K is rather unlikely to hit him, and while his turn bet is weird, I also wasn’t sure he’d check Kings on the river. Given the number of draws out there, though, I do think his line is a good one. I still like my value bet, though, even if knowing he can occasionally have a K.

  1. can you contruct a range for his flop/turn combo?

What were you looking to get called by? I guess it does look like he can have a weak TP, although he may not have mmany of those in his UTG1 opening range.

    • I can’t speak for Andrew, who might have a different read on this opponent, but given the facts as stated, UTG1 might well have a bluff-beater like AQ or AJ, or even 88 or 87s, in which case he bet the turn trying to rep AK or maybe KQ.

From UTG1’s point of view, Andrew is unlikely to have an overpair because he didn’t 3-bet pre. That tends to polarize Andrew’s range and makes it very hard to fold a bluff-beater.

This assumes UTG1 would play those hands the way he did, but as Andrew made one of his irresistably sexy underbets on the flop, it’s not at all unreasonable to think UTG1 would float a loose call, especially if he has a big diamond.

  2. I’m surprised to hear that you like his flop c/c after the SB calls. Although unlikely drawing dead, his diamond outs are not clean, and he has RIO on Ax hands vs A6 and A7 which might flat sb some %. HU it seems justifiable, 3-way, i’m not a fan. He also has no BD outs.

River seems okay, semi thin. I can see him checking here w/ TT and JJ some % not wanting to get raised in a multi-way pot, so I wouldn’t say he never has a hand you don’t beat.

Obv betting 99 makes you harder to play against.

    • Yeah, flop is close, but he’s got position on at least one of us, there’s a fair chance the turn checks around, and his AK could be good, in which case he has one of us dominated. I don’t think this would be a bad line with TT and JJ, and I certainly don’t know for sure that this player isn’t capable of it, but I would (and did) bet against it.

  3. Classic donk-with-AK betting pattern, especially given (a) he raised from EP in a nine-hander, and (b) $17 to call in a $69 pot looks like a value meal to most fish.

That doesn’t mean he has AK or that you shouldn’t v-bet, but in the absence of any useful information about this opponent, I think I’d have given him more credit for AK than you did.

    • I guess I expected him to bet the river with AK. Plus, as you mention, I think betting might be OK even knowing he plays AK like this.
