A Less Successful Bluff

I’ve bragged about some creative bluffs recently, so here’s one where I got owned:

Full Tilt No-Limit Hold’em, $4.00 BB (9 handed) – Full-Tilt Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

SB ($434)
BB ($160)
UTG ($400)
UTG+1 ($641.60)
Hero (MP1) ($1081.40)
MP2 ($418.40)
MP3 ($1143)
CO ($131)
Button ($402)

Preflop: Hero is MP1 with Q, Q
1 fold, UTG+1 bets $12, Hero calls $12, 6 folds

Flop: ($30) 4, 9, 10 (2 players)
UTG+1 checks, Hero bets $9, UTG+1 calls $9

Turn: ($48) 7 (2 players)
UTG+1 checks, Hero bets $15, UTG+1 raises to $64, Hero calls $49

River: ($176) 7 (2 players)
UTG+1 bets $140, Hero raises to $996.40 (All-In), UTG+1 calls $416.60 (All-In)

Total pot: $1289.20 | Rake: $3

Results:
UTG+1 had A, A (two pair, Aces and sevens).
Hero had Q, Q (two pair, Queens and sevens).
Outcome: UTG+1 won $1286.20

When he check-raises the turn, I realize there’s a substantial risk that I’m not good. I don’t see him playing any full houses this way, so I went for it.

  1. Could you Foucault elaborate about your read?
I am interested on your process of exclusion?-full house elimination.
it it just betting pattern?,your opponnent profile?,session dynamics or something else.
    Thank you.

    • Combination of things. He’s on the nitty side, so I think hands that make two pair on the flop/turn aren’t in his range. I also don’t see him check-calling a set on the flop.

      • Thanks for clarification.
My read was that key point is the interpretation of his check-call on flop.
What was TOP objective behind his check-call on flop? I had a dilemma.
I was not able to exclude deception as top objective.

    • I underbet in spots like this a lot. Villain’s range for checking flop is mostly air. It contains a few worse hands that can call a bet but also possibly a few better hands. I don’t see any value in giving him a free card, but I’m not looking to build a big pot here either. Mostly I’m betting to charge hands like AJ, with or without a diamond.

    • He ought to be more inclined to call without the Ad. If I am bluffing, Adx is a very plausible hand for me to bluffing with.

      • But the nut flush is also a decent part of your value range. How often do you actually take this line with an offsuit ace? Don’t you often fold even AdTx pre-flop? I would prob be more inclined to call with the Ad, am I wrong?

        • Very good point. I don’t think you’re wrong, but I do think you’re smarter than the average 2/4 grinder in this regard 🙂

    • I like his flop and turn play. I’m not sure about river. I feel like the reason he’s calling is that he thinks I wouldn’t have underbet a set/flush on the turn. I would have, but I don’t know that he knows that. It’s close.

  2. Isn’t “not looking to build a big pot” kinda transparent. If I have the AA I’m thinking “How can his hand merit a river shove if he wasn’t willing to really build the pot on the flop and river?”

    • He may perceive it to be. In truth I would play a set and possibly a flush this way as well on the flop/turn, but it’s quite possible, maybe even likely, that he doesn’t think that. In that case, he’s not going to give me credit for it when I shove.

  3. I rarely, if ever, run a bluff like this if villain has more than a third of his chips in the pot. I find it’s just too hard for most players to fold when they’re that heavily invested.

You play a little higher than I do, so YMMV.

  4. Did you only run this bluff due to the pairing of the board on the river or would you have still considered making it had it being a complete blank? What about it if was another diamond or something like Kc.
